Dating websites are growing and there are now hundreds of internet match-making and dating websites to choose from. In addition to popular sites like eHarmony and Match.com, millions worldwide are now connected to social networking websites like Facebook. Investigators warn that indviduals met online should be verified to minimize the risk for scams and fraud.

Several international background check services are available and advised for new relationships begun on the internet, especially when the individual involved is not known personally. Without the tools and expertise of a professional investigator or background check firm, it can be very difficult to know if someone is who he or she claims to be, especially when that person lives in a foreign country. Investigators have reported growing demand for background checks as the risk for fraud and dating scams increase, and as more people connect via the internet.

A dating background check is simply a background check or verification process which involves a subject who was met over the Internet, and where the relationship is romantic in nature. If a relationship is progressing and there is a chance for a serious relationship, industry observers emphasize getting a background check early, since many consumers contact private investigators after the damage is done, and the fraud or scam complete.
