Crazy Thing Called Love- Types of Love in Relationship

 

I guess it all starts from the natural instinct to search for another and not to be alone. Having spent some time alone and maybe even felt a bit lonely, we suddenly feel attraction to a certain person and realize we’re falling in love. This is the first love stage which can later transform into a major love or fade away after a week or month.

Why do we get attracted by other people or how do we choose someone we want to get the same emotional response from? There can be several reasons:

-        he/she excites you sexually;

-        he/she simply appears in a right place and time, just when you feel lonely and in need;

-        he resembles your father (if you’re a woman), she resembles your mother (if you’re a man);

-        he/she possesses a feature that you feel you lack (e.g. self-confidence);

-        you seek for someone to take care of you or vice versa someone you want to take care of.

Psychologists state that only every third person experience love, while others identify love with passion, affection, attachment, respect and taking care. According to them, there are two types of love: true love and egoistic love. True love has not a tiny bit of egoism. You love a person and you don’t ask him/her for nothing in return. You don’t even get angry if he/she chooses another one to love. True love wants to see the other one really happy. However, loving this way you might quickly become a stepping stone. This love is in fact very rare to find. It is more common to have an egoistic love: you think you love someone, but in fact you want him/her to love you. All of your tenderness towards him/her is really a way to get the same feedback.

Philosophers have also distinguished many love forms, but the two most important are- spiritual love and erotic love. According to them, only a spiritual love, often called by Greeks a brotherly love, is the closest to the true love. But this love is most of the times purely spiritual and distant from the passion and desire.

In fact, whether philosophically, or psychologically, it is hard to identify love and its forms. Love has a variety of forms and is closely related to many emotions, like desire, affection, attachment, but the most important components are passion, intimacy and commitment.  About these three very important components we’ll talk next time.
