Coping with a break up and the ensuing anxiety and pain is a challenging problem for men and women alike. While it is difficult to get control of your emotions when you anticipate the breakup, not seeing it coming can bury you under an avalanche of mixed emotions. Either way, when you truly care for the other person a broken relationship causes stress and great unhappiness. Applying the following 3 tips will give you direction as you are coping with break up anxiety and seeking to reclaim peace of mind.
First of all you need to be kind to yourself! Do not blame and berate yourself with ugly thoughts of rejection. Often when we are feeling poorly we drag every negative thought we can muster and add it to our already overloaded brain. Resist the temptation to do this. Things are painful enough as they are, as you struggle to reclaim peace of mind. Try to look at the situation objectively. While we can not help who we are, we can change what we do and how we react.
Secondly, give yourself time to adjust to what has happened. While your instinct might be to get on the phone, text message, or send an email, resist the urge to do this. You really do not want to do anything you might regret later. Guard your self respect and integrity, even while you are coping with break up anxiety. Although time might not feel like your ally at the moment, it will give you the chance to reflect and gain some objectivity on how to deal with your broken relationship.
Thirdly, do not alienate yourself from your friends and family. Maybe you feel like you just want to hole up and die, hanging out with genuine friends and caring family reinforces your self esteem and distracts you from the negative merry-go-round in your brain. There ARE others who like and love you. You do not need to succumb to your thoughts of self rejection. Seek out friends whose company you enjoy, those who do not ask prying questions and who have a positive attitude.
Well, you might not feel that the above advice applies to you. Due to the nature of this article, your personal circumstances are not known to me. Nevertheless, if you do your best to apply the 3 tips I have provided here, you will be taking positive action in coping with break up anxiety and finding the path to reclaim peace of mind.
